How Long Do Phonak Hearing Aids Last? And What Replaces Yours

How Long Do Phonak Hearing Aids Last? And What Replaces Yours

Updated October 2026

TL;DR: Most Phonak hearing aids give five years or more of daily use. Phonak itself rates its rechargeable Audéo models for a five-year service life. The battery usually decides when you replace them, not the electronics. If yours are past year four and fading by dinner, compare a repair quote with the current Phonak Audéo EON level that matches what you wear now.

Your Phonak hearing aids did not come with an expiry date stamped on the shell. A shame, since it would spare you a lot of squinting at the charger light. So how long do Phonak hearing aids last in a real life of pockets, sweat and nightly charging? Luck plays a smaller part than you would think. Chemistry plays a bigger one.

How Long Do Phonak Hearing Aids Last?

Plan on about five years of dependable daily use, with many pairs running longer. That figure comes from Phonak. The company states an expected service life of five years for its rechargeable Audéo hearing aids and their chargers. It also commits to at least five years of repair service after it retires a model from its portfolio.

Those are two different clocks. Phonak's service-life figure tells you how long it designs the device to perform safely. Its repair commitment tells you how long parts and service stay available once a model leaves the lineup. Together they explain why the five-year mark matters so much. Past it, your hearing aids may still work fine. Every repair, though, turns into a question of whether the money belongs in the old pair or a new one.

What stretches or shortens that window:

  • Charging habits. A lithium-ion cell ages with every charge cycle. Five years of nightly charging adds up to roughly 1,800 cycles.

  • Moisture and earwax. Wax guards that go unchanged let debris reach the receiver, where it muffles or blocks the sound.

  • Heat. Phonak warns that long storage below 10°C or above 30°C can hurt battery performance. A hot glovebox in July is a quiet enemy.

  • Your hearing. If your hearing changes and your fitting can no longer keep up, the device has reached the end of its useful life, even if it still powers on.

Why the Battery Sets the Clock on Rechargeable Phonaks

The battery usually wears out before anything else. Every current Phonak Audéo model runs on a sealed, built-in lithium-ion cell. Lithium-ion loses a little capacity each time it charges and discharges.

The effect shows up slowly. A pair that lasted from breakfast to bedtime in year one starts asking for the charger by early evening in year four. Phonak says operating time depends on "battery age," among other factors. It also says a service can replace a battery with shortened life. You cannot swap it yourself, because the cell sits inside the sealed housing that earns the IP68 rating.

That sealed design is a trade worth understanding. It keeps sweat, rain and dust out. That protection is what keeps the electronics healthy for years. The cost is that a tired battery means sending the hearing aids in, rather than popping in a fresh cell at the kitchen table. Phonak covers the process on its page about replacing the battery on Phonak rechargeable hearing aids.

Runtime per charge across the Phonak lines you can still buy, using fresh-battery figures that an older pair will fall short of:

Phonak line

Generation

Runtime per charge, fresh battery

Audéo EON Sphere

Current

Up to 38 hours

Audéo EON R

Current

Up to 38 hours

Audéo Infinio Ultra Sphere

Previous

Up to 56 hours

Audéo R Infinio Ultra

Previous

Up to 31 hours

Audéo Lumity

Older

Up to 24 hours

The previous-generation Infinio Ultra Sphere runs longer per charge than the newer EON. Phonak spent the EON redesign on size and weight instead. So the newest pair is not automatically the longest-running one. If all-day runtime matters more to you than a smaller shell, a provider can walk you through that trade.

Signs Your Phonak Hearing Aids Need Replacing

Replace them when the problems cost you more than the fixes do. One fault is a repair. A pattern is a retirement notice.

The patterns worth taking seriously:

  • The battery dies before your day does, even after a full overnight charge in a clean charger.

  • Sound cuts in and out or turns crackly. Fresh wax guards and a new dome do not fix it.

  • Bluetooth drops have become constant rather than occasional. Our guide to Phonak troubleshooting at home covers the fixes worth trying first.

  • Speech in noise has gotten harder. Your hearing may have changed past what the old device can handle.

  • You need a feature your pair lacks, such as Auracast broadcast audio in venues that now offer it.

  • Repairs are stacking up after the warranty has ended.

Most of these signs point at the device. One points at you. It is also the one people miss. If restaurants feel worse than they did two years ago, take our free online hearing test before you blame the hardware. An updated hearing profile and a remote adjustment sometimes buy another year or two.

Should You Repair or Replace Your Phonak?

Repair while the warranty is active and the pair still suits your hearing. Replace once the warranty is over and the repair would fund a meaningful share of a new pair.

The logic gets simple once you separate the two clocks. Inside the manufacturer warranty, a repair costs you little and resets nothing. It almost always wins. Phonak hearing aids from Injoy carry a 4-year manufacturer warranty and 3-year loss and damage coverage, both starting on the delivery date. After that, we still offer out-of-warranty repair for up to five years after purchase. We quote it before any work starts.

A practical way to weigh it:

No repair adds a capability the platform never had

One more factor tips the close calls. A generation gap is more than a newer badge. Lumity runs on the PRISM chip, two platforms back. EON, the newest, runs Phonak's ERA chip. On the Sphere models, it adds a second chip built only for pulling voices out of noise. Spending repair money on a platform two generations back is the hearing equivalent of new tires on a car you plan to sell.

What Replaces Your Phonak Today

The closest replacement is the current Audéo EON at the same number you wear now. Phonak keeps its level numbers consistent across generations. A 90 replaces a 90, and a 70 replaces a 70.

The bigger choice sits between the two EON families. EON Sphere pairs the ERA chip with HYPERSONIC, a dedicated AI chip that runs Spheric Speech Clarity 3.0 to separate voices from noise. The R version runs ERA on its own, without that second chip. Both share the same shell, the same 38-hour runtime and Auracast broadcast audio.

Inside the Sphere family, the level decides how much of the work the hearing aid does for you:

  • EON E90 Sphere switches Spheric Speech Clarity on by itself at full strength. It adds Speech Enhancer for soft and distant voices, with 20 fine-tuning channels.

  • EON E70 Sphere keeps the self-switching Spheric mode and 20 channels. It drops Speech Enhancer, so a voice from the next room is harder to catch.

  • EON E50 Sphere has Spheric Speech Clarity too. You turn it on yourself in the app, at moderate strength, with 16 channels.

Each product page carries the live price. The table gives you the shortlist. What neither can tell you is which level fits your audiogram. Talk to one of our hearing care experts and they will match your current pair, your hearing and your week to the right EON level.

How Long Do Older Phonak Models Last Compared to EON?

Older Phonak models last about as long as new ones. Their clock simply started earlier, since the service life runs from the day you start wearing them.

A Lumity bought four years ago sits close to the five-year mark, however carefully you treated it. An Audéo Infinio Ultra Sphere bought last year has most of its life ahead of it. That is why "should I upgrade" and "is it worn out" are separate questions. A two-year-old pair with a good battery rarely justifies replacement for features alone. The exception is a feature that changes your week.

Where EON changes the week:

  • Size. Phonak says the EON Sphere is 25% smaller and 20% lighter than the generation before it.

  • Noise handling. Spheric Speech Clarity 3.0 replaces version 2.0 on the Sphere models.

  • Connectivity. Bluetooth Classic plus LE Audio, Auracast broadcast, eight saved pairings and two active connections at once.

  • Charging. A full charge takes 2.5 hours. One hour gets you to roughly half.

How to Make Your Phonak Hearing Aids Last Longer

Daily care adds years for about two minutes of effort. Moisture, wax and heat cause more early trouble than the electronics do.

A routine that protects the five-year clock:

  • Change wax guards on schedule. Phonak recommends every four weeks on a standard receiver and every two weeks on an ActiveVent receiver.

  • Wipe the shell and domes every night before they go into the charger. Wax never gets the chance to dry onto the contacts.

  • Keep the charger clean and dry. Dirty contacts make a healthy battery look like a dying one.

  • Store them at room temperature. Skip the car, the windowsill and the bathroom shelf beside a hot shower.

  • Take them out for sleep. A night on the pillow brings heat, pressure and feedback. None of it helps.

The fitting counts as care too. With Injoy, adjustments are unlimited for as long as you own your devices, by phone or video, with no time limits and no session caps. That matters for lifespan more than it sounds. A hearing aid tuned to your current hearing stays useful years longer than one stuck on the settings from the week you bought it.

Your Next Phonak, Fitted Without the Waiting Room

When your current pair reaches the end of the road, the next one should arrive already set up for you. We program your new Phonaks to your audiogram before they ship. A licensed hearing care provider then fits them with you by phone or video and books your follow-ups for you. That same provider stays with you through your first 60 days. You can upload your audiogram or take the free test. Every order includes a 60-day trial.

The hearing aids are identical to what any clinic sells. The professional care is identical. The price is not. That's the Injoy difference. Talk to one of our hearing care experts about the right replacement for your pair.

How Long Do Phonak Hearing Aids Last: Your Questions

Will my old Phonak charger work with new EON hearing aids?

No. Audéo EON uses its own chargers, the Phonak Charger RIC E and the ChargerGo RIC I E. An older Lumity or Infinio charger will not take them. Phonak's TV Connector, PartnerMic, RemoteControl and Roger microphones do work with EON. Our team can confirm which of your accessories carry over.

Do Phonak chargers wear out too?

Yes. Phonak gives its compatible chargers the same five-year expected service life as the hearing aids. A charger with dirty or worn contacts can make a healthy battery look like a dying one. Check the charger first when runtime drops. We can help you tell which one is the problem.

Should I keep my old Phonak hearing aids as a backup?

Usually, yes, if they still charge and your hearing has not changed much. A working spare pair covers you while your main pair is out for service. Charge the spare now and then so it is ready when you need it. Ask us whether your old pair still suits your hearing.

Do Phonak hearing aids last longer than other brands?

Not in any way the logo decides. The major brands all build their rechargeable models on lithium-ion cells that age the same way. How you care for them and how well they match your hearing matter far more than the logo. Our team can help you compare brands on what changes for you.

Is it worth upgrading Phonak hearing aids that still work?

Usually not on features alone, if they are under three years old and the battery holds a full day. It becomes worth it when your hearing has changed, when you want Auracast or stronger noise handling, or when repairs start stacking up. We can look at your situation and give you a straight answer either way.

What is the warranty on Phonak hearing aids from Injoy?

Prescription Phonak models from Injoy come with a 4-year manufacturer warranty and 3-year loss and damage coverage on most models, starting on the delivery date. Once the warranty ends, we offer quoted out-of-warranty repair for up to five years from purchase. Our warranty page has the full terms.
