Android vs. iPhone Hearing Aid Compatibility
Android vs. iPhone Hearing Aid Compatibility: No Jargon, No Surprises
iPhone users have historically had an easier time with hearing aid connectivity. That gap has narrowed significantly with the arrival of Bluetooth LE Audio, but it hasn't closed entirely, and for Android users buying the wrong model means living with a limitation every time the phone rings. Here's what's actually happening and why it matters.
Why iPhone Compatibility Is Straightforward
Apple introduced the MFi (Made for iPhone) hearing aid standard years ago and has maintained consistent support across iPhone models ever since. Any MFi-compatible hearing aid delivers full hands-free calling and audio streaming on any iPhone 11 or newer running iOS 15.3 or later. Virtually every model in our lineup supports iPhone hands-free. The only exception is the Signia Silk, which carries no Bluetooth chip at all due to its extremely small completely-in-canal form factor. If you use an iPhone, pick your hearing aid based on features and fit. Compatibility is not your problem.
Why Android Compatibility Is More Complicated
Android doesn't have a single universal standard equivalent to MFi, and it never has. For years, Android relied on the ASHA (Audio Streaming for Hearing Aids) protocol, which enables audio streaming but not true hands-free calling. You could hear audio through your hearing aids, but your voice still went through the phone's microphone during calls. Hands-free required a separate accessory. For a lot of Android users, that was the whole experience, and they didn't know it could be different.
Bluetooth LE Audio changed this for current Android flagship devices. Phones with Bluetooth 5.2 or 5.3 and LE Audio support can now achieve full hands-free calling with compatible hearing aids, no accessory required. The catch is that "current flagship Android" is doing a lot of work in that sentence. Older Android devices and many mid-range models don't support LE Audio and still face the same ASHA limitations they always have.

Common Questions About Hearing Aids for Android and IPhone Users
Can I use any hearing aid with my Android phone?
You can use most hearing aids with an Android phone, but the experience varies significantly by model and protocol. Some deliver full hands-free calling, some deliver streaming only, and some require an accessory for any Android connectivity at all. The Signia Pure Charge&Go IX BCT is the most universally compatible option for Android users, regardless of phone age or model. Talk to our team with your specific phone before deciding.
What does "hands-free" actually mean for hearing aids?
Hands-free means your hearing aids act as a wireless headset during phone calls. Audio comes through the hearing aids, and your voice is picked up by the hearing aid microphones and transmitted to the caller. You don't hold your phone to your ear, you don't need earbuds, and the audio is processed for your specific hearing profile. Streaming without hands-free means audio plays through your hearing aids, but your voice still goes through the phone's microphone during calls, which means holding the phone up like it's 2005.
Do I need a new Android phone to get hands-free calling with hearing aids?
Not necessarily, but it depends on your current device. Bluetooth LE Audio support, required for hands-free calling on most current hearing aid models, is available on most Android flagship devices released in the last two to three years. Older or mid-range devices may not qualify. The Signia Pure Charge&Go IX BCT works with any Android phone regardless of age or Bluetooth version, making it the safest choice if you're unsure about your phone's capabilities.
Which hearing aids work best with Samsung phones?
Current Samsung flagship models, Galaxy S22 and newer, Galaxy Z Fold and Flip series, support Bluetooth LE Audio, making them compatible with full hands-free calling on Phonak Infinio series, ReSound Vivia, and other LE Audio models. The Signia Pure Charge&Go IX BCT works with all Samsung models regardless of generation. Confirm your specific model with our team before buying, and we'll tell you exactly what to expect.
Can I switch between iPhone and Android if I change phones later?
It depends on the model. The Signia Pure Charge&Go IX BCT handles any phone switch without a second thought. LE Audio models work well with both current iOS and current Android flagship devices. MFi models require an accessory for full Android functionality. If you're likely to switch platforms at some point, factor that into your model selection now rather than later.
