Remote Hearing Aid Fitting: How It Works

Remote Hearing Aid Fitting: How It Works

Updated October 2026

TL;DR: Remote hearing aid fitting is a live appointment by phone or video, where a licensed hearing care provider adjusts your hearing aids through the manufacturer's software while you wear them at home. Injoy Hearing is an authorized online retailer whose licensed hearing care providers program every device before it ships, then fit it remotely. Research finds outcomes comparable to in-person fitting.

Injoy Hearing is an online retailer of prescription hearing aids with licensed hearing care providers. Remote hearing aid fitting is how we fit every device we sell. Our providers program your hearing aids to your audiogram using official manufacturer software before they ship. Then they fit and fine-tune them with you by phone or video after they arrive. Nobody needs to touch your ears for the part of fitting that changes what you hear.

What Is Remote Hearing Aid Fitting?

Remote hearing aid fitting is a hearing aid appointment held over a phone or video connection instead of in a clinic. Your provider sees and changes your hearing aid settings in real time, using the same manufacturer software a clinic uses, while you sit at home wearing the devices.

This works because modern hearing aids are programmable computers with a wireless link. In a clinic, a provider connects your hearing aids to fitting software and adjusts gain, compression and programs while you listen. Remote fitting keeps that software and that provider. It changes only the connection. Your hearing aids talk to an app on your phone. The app relays the provider's changes over the internet.

Since 2005, the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association has recognized telepractice as an appropriate way to deliver audiology services. It lists hearing aid fitting among established teleaudiology practice areas.

Remote fitting covers:

  • Programming to your audiogram, done before your hearing aids ship.

  • The first fitting, a live session to set comfort and clarity once you are wearing them.

  • Follow-up adjustments as your brain adapts over the following weeks.

  • Program changes for the places you go, such as restaurants or church.

  • Ongoing fine-tuning for as long as you own the devices.

Does Remote Hearing Aid Fitting Work as Well as In-Person?

Research finds it does for most people. A 2023 study found no significant differences between face-to-face and remote hearing aid fitting in consultation time, satisfaction, quality of care or hearing results.

An International Journal of Audiology crossover trial reached a similar conclusion for follow-up care. It found that remote follow-up delivered improvements that did not differ from in-person consultations, with high satisfaction for both.

The honest caveat comes from the people in these studies. In a 2024 study, people reported high satisfaction with remote delivery. Even so, about two in three said they would prefer a future fitting in person. Familiarity drives a lot of that preference. Results and preference are different things. Both deserve a straight answer.

Hearing aid forums sum up the real variable well: the fitter matters more than the device. Remote fitting does not change who the fitter is. It changes where you sit.

How Remote Hearing Aid Fitting Works With Injoy

The process runs in a fixed order. Programming always comes first, and fitting always follows delivery.

6. Ongoing care

Unlimited adjustments for as long as you own your devices

Two roles split the work, and they never blur. Before you buy, a hearing care expert helps you choose. After you buy, a licensed hearing care provider handles programming and fitting. We assign one provider to you for your whole first 60 days. You never explain your hearing to someone new.

If you already have an audiogram from any licensed hearing professional, you can upload your audiogram. Without one, our free online hearing test takes about 5 to 10 minutes. It is a screening, not a clinical diagnosis. Its results help our providers program your hearing aids.

What Happens During Your First Remote Fitting

Your first fitting runs about an hour. Your provider schedules it within 24 to 48 hours of your hearing aids arriving. A typical hour covers seven things.

  • Fit and comfort check. Your provider walks you through placing each hearing aid and checks how the domes and receivers feel.

  • App connection. You pair the hearing aids with the manufacturer's app, which opens the remote link.

  • Live adjustments. Your provider changes settings while you talk. You say what sounds sharp, dull or tinny. They adjust in real time.

  • Real-world tests. You might turn on the TV, run the kitchen tap or walk into another room to test distance.

  • Programs and controls. Your provider sets up programs for your regular places and shows you the controls.

  • Care basics. You learn charging, cleaning and wax guard changes.

  • Follow-ups booked. Before the call ends, your provider books your follow-ups, four at minimum across your first 60 days.

Expect the first day to feel a little odd. Your own voice may sound boomy at first. Quiet sounds may seem loud, too. Your provider usually starts below your full prescription and raises it as your brain adapts. Better hearing is a process, not a switch.

What You Need at Home for a Remote Fitting

You need less than most people expect. A remote fitting asks for four things.

  • A smartphone or tablet that runs your hearing aid manufacturer's app.

  • A steady internet or cellular connection for the length of the call.

  • Charged hearing aids, fresh off a full night in the charger.

  • A quiet spot where you can hear your provider and test a few sounds.

Some manufacturers build remote care straight into their apps. ReSound, for example, offers remote fine tuning through ReSound Assist Live. Your provider will tell you which app your hearing aids use and how to open the session. If technology makes you nervous, a family member can sit in on the first call.

What Remote Fitting Cannot Do

Remote fitting handles the settings. Those settings are what change what you hear. It cannot handle physical work that needs hands on your ears.

Some people need or prefer in-person care. A blocked ear canal that needs earwax removal, a medical ear problem, or a need for close hands-on help are reasons to see a local professional. For those people, a local clinic is the right call. We will say so.

A few other limits are worth knowing:

  • We do not perform diagnostic testing. Audiograms come from outside providers or our free online hearing test.

  • We are not a clinic. We are an online retailer with licensed hearing care providers.

  • Sudden or persistent changes in hearing call for a licensed medical professional, not a remote adjustment.

Some buyers also ask about real ear measurement, a test that checks sound levels inside the ear canal. Our guide to whether online hearing aids are dialed in to your audiogram covers that question in full.

What Happens After Your Remote Fitting

Your care does not end with the first call. Your provider books at least four follow-ups across your first 60 days, with the last one falling before your 60-day trial ends. After that, adjustments stay unlimited for as long as you own your devices, with no time limits and no session caps.

Follow-ups are usually short check-ins. You report what happened at dinner, at church or on the phone. Your provider adjusts the settings to match. Most people adjust over the first couple of weeks. The follow-ups exist to keep pace with that change.

Remote Hearing Aid Fitting: Your Questions

How long does a remote hearing aid fitting take?

The first fitting runs about an hour. Your provider schedules it within 24 to 48 hours of your hearing aids arriving. Follow-ups are shorter check-ins. Their length depends on what you need that day.

Do I need a computer for a remote fitting?

Usually not. Most hearing aids connect through the manufacturer's app on a smartphone or tablet. One exception: the Signia Silk Charge&Go IX needs a Windows computer for at-home remote programming, with a refundable deposit on the programming tool.

Can remote fitting work for severe hearing loss?

Often, yes. Programming and fine-tuning work the same way across degrees of loss, using the manufacturer's software. Your audiogram decides which hearing aid and receiver fit. Our team can look at your results and tell you whether remote care suits you.

What if something goes wrong between appointments?

Call us. You can reach our team by phone Monday through Friday, 8am to 5pm CT. Your provider can adjust settings remotely whenever you need, with no session caps.

Can my local hearing professional adjust hearing aids fitted remotely?

That depends on the professional and the device. Our providers handle every adjustment remotely for as long as you own your hearing aids, so you never need a local visit for adjustments. Ask us if you want to involve someone local.

Is the consultation before I buy free?

Yes. The pre-sale consultation with a hearing care expert is a scheduled appointment. It is free. The expert helps you choose a model and level before any programming starts.
