Oticon Intent vs Reveal sounds like old versus new, and most people assume new means it hears better. It doesn't, at least not level for level: put an Intent and a Reveal of the same level at the same noisy dinner table and they bring the same amount of skill to the problem. What Reveal brings is a handful of new things it can do, and whether any of them earns its keep depends on how your week goes among these Oticon hearing aids.

What You Hear Is Decided by the Level

The number after the name decides how well either one handles a loud room, and the generation doesn't change it. Oticon builds both lines on the same ladder: the same number of processing channels, the same fitting bands and the same battery at every matching level. Fitting bands are the separate handles your licensed hearing care provider uses to shape sound to your hearing loss, so more bands means a fit that follows the shape of your loss instead of approximating it.

That makes the level the thing to shop for first:

• Premium gives your provider the most fitting bands and the strongest noise handling, which shows up first in restaurants and busy family gatherings.

• Advanced and Premium add motion sensors that notice when you move through a space, so the hearing aid responds to you as well as to the room.

• Standard and Essential suit quieter weeks, one-on-one conversation and smaller groups.

What Reveal Can Do That Intent Can't

Reveal's additions are about connection and toughness, not about hearing a room better. Oticon lists four for Reveal that it does not list for Intent, and each one either fits your life or doesn't:

• Auracast lets a theater, airport, gym or house of worship send its sound straight into your hearing aids. Intent is built to be ready for it, but only Reveal receives it now.

• An IP68 rating means rain, sweat and an accidental dunk are covered. Oticon gives Intent a water-repellent coating and no rating.

• Google Fast Pair lets an Android phone find your hearing aids without a trip through Bluetooth settings.

• Tap control lets you answer a call or pause music with a tap on your ear, which to everyone nearby looks like you just remembered something important.

Is Auracast Worth Paying For?

Only if you spend time where it is switched on. Auracast works like a radio station for hearing aids: a venue installs a transmitter, and every compatible pair in the room can tune in to the stage, the gate announcement or the sermon without the echo of the room in the way. Restaurants, cars and living rooms broadcast nothing, and that is where most people do their hardest listening.

So ask where your week goes:

• Regular theatergoers, frequent flyers and anyone at a church or lecture hall that has installed it will use Auracast often, and Reveal is the only one of the two that receives it.

• If your hardest listening happens at the dinner table, Auracast won't help there, and the money is better spent on a higher level.

• Venues are adding it, so it is a reasonable feature to buy for the next few years if broadcasts are already part of your life.

For the price of any Reveal we stock, you can get an Intent at least one level higher, so the real choice is extra features or extra hearing power. That turns the comparison upside down, because a buyer shopping by release date ends up paying more for a lower level.

• Reveal 4's price, at the Essential level, buys Intent 2 at Advanced with money left over, and that is two rungs up the ladder.

• For what Reveal 3 costs, Intent 2 comes in lower and sits one rung higher.

• The price of Reveal 2 buys Intent 1, the Premium level, which costs a little less right now.

In a quiet house, Reveal and its extras can be the better buy, because there is little noise for a higher level to fight. At a busy restaurant on a Friday night, the higher Intent level wins, and it is not close.

Buy Intent when:

• Your budget lands where Intent 3 sits, the least expensive Oticon we carry.

• Broadcasts and water ratings don't come up in your life.

Not at the same level. Oticon gives both lines the same channels, fitting bands and noise handling rung for rung, so a Reveal 2 and an Intent 2 bring the same skill to a noisy room. Reveal's advantages are broadcasts, the water rating, Android pairing and tap control.

Can Oticon Intent get Auracast with an update?

Oticon describes Intent as ready for Auracast, but only Reveal receives broadcasts today. If venue broadcasts matter to you now, Reveal is the one to buy rather than a bet on a future update.

How long does the battery last on Oticon Intent and Reveal?

Oticon rates both for up to 24 hours on a charge at every level. Streaming and noisy days pull that down, so plan around a normal day with your phone in use rather than the rated maximum.

Do Oticon Intent and Reveal use the same accessories?
