Starkey Costco Hearing Aids: SoundGear AMP vs Omega AI Compared

Starkey Costco Hearing Aids: SoundGear AMP vs Omega AI Compared

TL;DR: SoundGear AMP at Costco is real Starkey technology. It runs on the older Edge AI platform, not Starkey's current Omega AI. Price and warehouse pickup make SoundGear AMP a fair pick. If remote care and lifetime adjustments matter more, we sell Edge AI and Omega AI online. Both include a 60-day trial.

Costco just quietly added a new Starkey hearing aid to about 100 warehouses. The Starkey logo is nowhere on the box, and that is not an accident. If you are shopping Starkey Costco options, here is the honest read. The SoundGear AMP is real Starkey technology. It is not the newest platform Starkey makes. We walk through what SoundGear AMP is. Then we stack it up against two Starkey options we sell. You will see where each one fits. What you give up at each price tier matters. So does how the service model changes ownership over time.

What Is SoundGear AMP, and Why Is It at Costco?

Starkey makes SoundGear AMP, and Costco sells it exclusively. Costco launched it as a pilot program in roughly 100 warehouses. Rollout expands from there if the pilot goes well. Starkey is the last of the "Big Five" global manufacturers to arrive at Costco. Sennheiser, Jabra Enhance, Philips, and Rexton got there first.

Here is the part the packaging does not tell you. Costco does not print the Starkey name on the SoundGear AMP box. So no, you are not imagining it. The name game is standard Costco practice. Sennheiser Sonite is Phonak technology. Jabra Enhance Pro is ReSound technology. SoundGear AMP is Starkey technology.

The bigger point is which Starkey platform sits inside. Starkey built SoundGear AMP on its Edge AI platform. That is the line Starkey ran before its current Omega AI flagship. Edge AI is still a strong, clinically tested platform. It is not, however, Starkey's newest technology.

Buyers can choose from five SoundGear AMP styles:

  • The mRIC R rechargeable
  • The RIC 312 with disposable batteries
  • The ITC R rechargeable custom
  • The CIC Wireless
  • The IIC non-wireless

Not every warehouse carries every style. Call ahead before you drive. See what our CEO says about the other options at Costco.

The mRIC R gets most of the attention. It is a rechargeable micro-RIC with an on-chip Deep Neural Network processing unit. Standard features include LE Audio streaming, all-day battery, and IP68 water resistance to 1 meter. That is good hardware for the price tier Costco is targeting.

Starkey Omega AI: What Makes It the Current Flagship

Starkey Omega AI is Starkey's newest hearing aid platform. It replaced Edge AI as the flagship line. Omega AI sits at the top of what Starkey builds today.

The chip is the first big difference. Omega AI runs on the G3 Gen AI Neuro Processor. Edge AI runs on the older G2 Neuro Processor. The G3 upgrade enables more sophisticated sound analysis in real time.

The headline feature is DNN 360. Traditional directional mics focus on sound in front of you. DNN 360 uses a deep neural network to analyze the entire soundscape around you at once. Starkey claims DNN 360 delivers up to 28 percent better speech understanding. Signal-to-noise ratio improves by up to 8 dB. Translation: your ears stop treating your dinner partner as background noise.

Two things to know about DNN 360. First, it is exclusive to the Omega AI 24 tier. The Omega AI 20 and 16 tiers use adaptive directionality instead. Second, DNN 360 makes Omega AI 24 different in loud rooms and busy conversations.

The Omega AI health suite is the other big upgrade over Edge AI. Fall detection carries over from earlier generations. The new additions are Balance Builder and a respiratory rate monitor. Balance Builder delivers guided exercises through the My Starkey app. Fall detection stays passive in the background. Balance Builder is proactive stability training you can use daily. Hearing loss ties directly to balance risk. Research from the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders confirms it. That connection makes the balance features practically useful, not just marketing filler.

Omega AI comes in three tiers, called 24, 20, and 16. All three run on the same G3 chip. The 24 gets DNN 360 and the full health suite. Tier 20 drops DNN 360 but keeps the current G3 platform. The 16 sits at the essential level for quieter lifestyles.

Starkey Edge AI 20 at Injoy: Same Platform, Different Service

Here is what most buyers do not know. We sell the same Edge AI platform that sits inside SoundGear AMP. Our version is Starkey Edge AI 20. It sits mid-tier in the Edge AI line.

The core technology matches. Both run on Starkey's G2 Neuro Processor with the integrated neural processing unit. The same on-chip DNN sits inside each. LE Audio streaming and the same water resistance rating apply to both rechargeable RIC models. If you like what SoundGear AMP does technically, Edge AI 20 does the same things.

What changes is the service model, not the platform.

Costco fits SoundGear AMP inside a participating warehouse. You show up, meet the hearing team, and receive an in-person fit. Follow-ups happen in the warehouse too. Our Edge AI 20 fittings happen from home. A licensed hearing care provider programs your devices to your audiogram before they ship. First fitting happens by phone or video after the devices arrive. Adjustments stay unlimited for the life of the hearing aids. No membership required, and we ship nationwide.

This is the tradeoff most Starkey Costco shoppers miss. You are not choosing between two different products. The choice is between two different service models that share the same core Edge AI platform. Costco offers a longer 180-day trial and value pricing. Both apply to the same generation of Starkey technology. We offer a 60-day trial with unlimited remote adjustments for life. Shipping goes nationwide, and no membership applies.

Some Starkey buyers will read that and pick Costco. That is honest, and we support the choice. Others will look at the 100-warehouse pilot. Their nearest Costco may not carry SoundGear AMP. For those buyers, Edge AI 20 at Injoy is the direct alternative on the same platform.

Head-to-Head: Same Platform, Different Seller

The table below covers the hardware side of the same-platform comparison. It puts SoundGear AMP mRIC R next to Starkey Edge AI 20 mRIC R. Costco sells one, and we sell the other. Both run on the same Starkey Edge AI generation.

Feature SoundGear AMP mRIC R (Costco) Edge AI 20 mRIC R (Injoy)
Platform Starkey Edge AI, G2 Neuro Processor Starkey Edge AI, G2 Neuro Processor
Directionality Adaptive with on-chip DNN Adaptive with on-chip DNN
Bluetooth streaming LE Audio LE Audio with hands-free calls
Battery life (rechargeable) Up to 41 hours without streaming Up to 41 hours without streaming
Water resistance IP68, up to 1 meter IP68, up to 1 meter
Style options at each seller Five styles at participating warehouses Multiple RIC styles online

Same platform, same hardware. The difference sits in the service model, which the last table covers.

Head-to-Head: Upgrade Path in Our Catalog

The second table covers what changes when you upgrade from Edge AI 20 to Omega AI 24. Both sit in our catalog under the same service model.

Feature Edge AI 20 (previous flagship) Omega AI 24 (current flagship)
Chip G2 Neuro Processor G3 Gen AI Neuro Processor
Directionality Adaptive with on-chip DNN DNN 360 full directionality
Health features Fall detection, activity tracking, balance assessment Fall detection, Balance Builder, respiratory rate, activity
Bluetooth streaming LE Audio with hands-free calls LE Audio with hands-free calls and Auracast
Auracast broadcast Ready via firmware Yes
Battery life (mRIC R rechargeable) Up to 41 hours without streaming Up to 41 hours without streaming
Water resistance IP68, up to 1 meter IP68, up to 1 meter

The upgrade money buys you the newer chip, DNN 360, and a full health suite. If those matter to your listening life, the step up is worth it.

What You Actually Get After the Sale

Hardware is half the story. The service model is the other half. It changes what you own for the life of the hearing aids.

At Costco, fittings happen inside the warehouse. You bring your audiogram or take a hearing screening there. Costco's hearing team programs the devices to your profile. You come back for adjustments in person. The price includes professional fitting and follow-up appointments, plus a 180-day return window. Costco requires a membership, and the pilot only covers about 100 warehouses so far. Tinnitus programming is typically unavailable through Costco's fitting software. This holds even when the underlying hardware supports it.

At Injoy, fittings happen from home. Product specialists help you choose before you order. A licensed hearing care provider programs your devices to your audiogram before they ship. First fitting happens by phone or video after the devices arrive. Follow-up adjustments stay unlimited for the life of the hearing aids. We ship nationwide and require no membership.

The trial period differs too. Costco offers a 180-day return window. We offer a 60-day risk-free trial. Costco's longer window is a real consumer protection point. Our shorter window comes with unlimited remote adjustments during and after. No restocking fees apply on returns.

Warranty coverage also differs. Prescription models at Injoy include a 4-year manufacturer warranty plus 3-year loss and damage coverage. Full details live on our warranty page. Costco sets its own warranty terms on SoundGear AMP and follows strong industry norms.

Head-to-Head: Service and Ownership

The service side comes down to these lines.

Service factor SoundGear AMP at Costco Edge AI 20 and Omega AI at Injoy
Fitting location Inside a participating warehouse Remotely by phone or video
Fitting provider Costco hearing staff Licensed hearing care provider
Follow-up model In-warehouse visits Phone or video from home
Adjustments included Standard Costco follow-ups Unlimited for the life of the devices
Trial period 180 days 60-day risk-free
Membership required Yes, Costco membership None
Availability Around 100 pilot warehouses Nationwide online shipping
Programming before shipping Not applicable, warehouse fit Yes, we program to your audiogram before shipping
Tinnitus programming access Typically unavailable Available when clinically appropriate

The two rows worth staring at are "Follow-up model" and "Adjustments included." Those two lines drive the real long-term ownership difference between the two paths.

Who Should Buy Which

Choose SoundGear AMP at Costco if you fit most of these:

  • You already shop at Costco and live near one of the pilot warehouses.
  • In-warehouse fitting and face-to-face appointments matter to you.
  • Price is the primary driver in your decision.
  • The newest Starkey platform and full health suite are not requirements.
  • Your listening life is average, not heavy in loud environments.

One caveat: Costco pilot coverage is thin. Call your warehouse first before you drive.

Consider Starkey Edge AI 20 at Injoy if you match most of these:

  • You want the same Edge AI platform that sits inside SoundGear AMP.
  • Remote care from home appeals more than an in-warehouse fit.
  • The nearest Costco pilot warehouse does not carry SoundGear AMP.
  • Unlimited remote adjustments for the life of the hearing aids matter to you.
  • A Costco membership is not something you want to hold.

Edge AI 20 is our answer for Starkey shoppers who like the platform. They want a nationwide service model instead of a warehouse pilot.

Starkey Omega AI 24 fits you if these lines describe your listening life:

  • You spend real time in noisy places like restaurants, group meetings, and busy family gatherings.
  • DNN 360 directionality for full-directional speech clarity matters to you.
  • The health suite matters, including Balance Builder and respiratory rate.
  • Auracast broadcast support is on your list.
  • Current-gen wireless features and the newest chip Starkey makes are non-negotiables.

The Omega AI 24 sits at the top of the current Starkey line. Pick this one when your listening environments are hard and varied.

The Honest Tradeoffs

We do not pretend Costco has no advantages. Our path also does not fit every buyer. Here is the read.

Costco's real strengths are the 180-day trial and in-person fitting for people who prefer it. Value pricing on a proven Starkey platform rounds out the case. Those are meaningful advantages, and none of them are wrong to pick.

Our strengths sit in different columns. We sell both Edge AI and current-gen Omega AI. Fitting happens by phone or video, so you never drive to a warehouse. Our adjustments stay unlimited for the life of your devices. We are an authorized retailer for every brand we carry. Warranties stay valid the same way they do at any authorized channel.

The tradeoff to consider is where you value the money. On the same Edge AI platform, Costco costs less than we do. The difference buys you unlimited remote care for life. It also buys no membership requirement and nationwide availability. Some buyers pick the lower price. Other buyers pick the service model. Both choices are honest.

The Practical Test We Use Most Often

Warehouse distance is the single fact that tips most buyers. The nearest pilot warehouse might sit over an hour away. In that case the Costco model breaks down fast. Hearing aid fitting is not one-and-done. Real fittings run through several rounds of adjustment. If each round means an hour drive each way, the value math shifts fast. Ask yourself two questions. First, how far away is the nearest Costco pilot warehouse? Second, how many drives are you willing to make?

Talk to a Hearing Care Expert Before You Buy

Choosing between a Costco warehouse pilot and a nationwide retailer is a real decision. Our team helps buyers make this exact comparison every week. We do not want to talk you out of Costco if that is the right fit. Our job is to help you make an honest decision.

Talk to one of our hearing care experts. Bring your questions about SoundGear AMP, Edge AI, and Omega AI. If you don't have an audiogram yet, take our free online hearing test first. Your audiogram tells us which fits your profile. We compare Edge AI 20 and Omega AI 24 against your hearing needs before you order. If you already have an audiogram from an outside provider, you can upload it here.

What if my nearest Costco doesn't have SoundGear AMP yet?

Costco's SoundGear AMP is only at about 100 pilot warehouses. Most Costco locations do not carry it. If your local warehouse is not part of the pilot, you have two options. Wait for the pilot rollout to expand. Or shop the same Edge AI platform from us at Injoy. We ship Edge AI 20 nationwide, and no Costco membership applies.

Does Costco sell Starkey Omega AI?

No. Costco sells SoundGear AMP, which uses Starkey's previous-generation Edge AI platform. Omega AI is not part of the Costco pilot. If you want Omega AI, you need a channel outside Costco. We are one option, and other authorized channels carry the platform too.

Can I get Starkey Edge AI without a Costco membership?

Yes. Costco memberships apply only to Costco channels. We sell Edge AI 20 online and ship nationwide, and no membership applies. Our full Starkey collection is available online. Buyers can compare Edge AI directly against Omega AI on the same order call.

Are the warranty terms different at Costco vs. Injoy?

The warranty terms depend on the seller. Costco sets its own warranty and return terms on SoundGear AMP. Those include a 180-day return window. Our prescription models include a 4-year manufacturer warranty. Loss and damage coverage runs three years with a $495 deductible on damage claims. Both channels are authorized Starkey sellers, so genuine warranty coverage applies through each respective path.

Which is better for someone new to hearing aids?

Neither channel is universally "better," and both work for first-time buyers. Costco suits people who want in-person visits and are near a pilot warehouse. We suit people who want remote care, unlimited adjustments for life, and a nationwide option. What matters most is honest expectations. A good fit to your hearing profile matters too. Support after the sale rounds out the checklist. See our comparison of buying online with Injoy vs. Costco for more on that choice.
