Hearing loss can have a significant effect on your quality of life. To state the obvious, losing your hearing sucks and can be extremely frustrating. Older adults with hearing loss may report feelings of depression. Because hearing loss can make conversation difficult, some people experience feelings of isolation. Hearing loss is also associated with cognitive impairment and decline.
The mechanism of interaction between hearing loss, cognitive impairment, depression, and isolation is being actively studied. Initial research suggests that treating hearing loss can have a positive effect on cognitive performance, especially memory.
Prevention
The following steps can help you prevent noise-induced hearing loss and avoid worsening of age-related hearing loss:
Protect your ears – Limiting the duration and intensity of your exposure to noise is the best protection. In the workplace, plastic earplugs or glycerin-filled earmuffs can help protect your ears from damaging noise.
Have your hearing tested – Consider regular hearing tests if you work in a noisy environment. If you’ve lost some hearing, you can take steps to prevent further loss.
Avoid recreational risks – Activities such as riding a snowmobile, hunting, using power tools, or listening to rock concerts can damage your hearing over time. Wearing hearing protectors or taking breaks from the noise can protect your ears. Turning down the music volume is helpful too.
The ear is made up of three primary parts: the outer ear, middle ear, and inner ear. Each section is composed of different structures. All of these play distinct roles in the process of converting sound waves into signals that go to the brain.
The inner ear contains a group of interconnected, fluid-filled chambers. The snail-shaped chamber, called the cochlea (KOK-lee-uh), plays a key role in hearing. Sound vibrations from the bones of the middle ear are transferred to the fluids of the cochlea. Tiny sensors (hair cells) lining the cochlea convert the vibrations into electrical impulses. These are then transmitted along the auditory nerve to your brain. This is where the initial damage and hearing loss occur due to age, noise exposure, or medication.

Brent’s experience includes 20+ years in the hearing health care industry. Upon entering the space, began working for a hearing aid manufacturer, later partnering in a 50+ location hearing health care practice, and current CEO of Injoy Hearing based in Overland Park, KS.
Brent has been the founder/owner in five successful startup organizations specializing in niche customer service segments and human resource development.
Brent is also an avid cyclist, multi-time marathoner, Ironman triathlete, and off-road motorcycle enthusiast, 25-year husband, father of three wonderful children and past Chairman of the Board for a non-profit humanitarian effort in Jamaica.

Scott has spent over 20 years in hearing care, helping grow two different office based hearing care companies. Each of these practices grew to become some of the largest, most successful independent hearing care practices of their time.

Tod Cordill, B.S.
As the Creative Director with Injoy, Tod has over 15 years experience within the hearing health care realm. He has thoroughly enjoyed all of his time helping people find solutions to their hearing problems.
Away from work, Tod enjoys discovering breweries in cities away from Kansas City, as well as new locales around his home town. If he had to name his favorite style of beer, it would be hefeweizen. He spends two to three Friday or Saturday evenings a month behind his drum kit as the drummer in a popular area cover band, which plays at venues around the city.
